Other Medical Concerns

From allergies to ventilators, here’s an A to Z (almost) on what to expect and what to do to make your travel experience safe and smooth.

Adding Special Service Requests

To help us accommodate your unique travel needs and provide an exceptional JetBlue experience, we recommend you book your travel as soon as possible and add a Special Service Request (SSR). You can add an SSR and choose your own seat when you book online at jetblue.com or with our free app. Just check the box under the traveler info, and dropdown menus will appear.

Need help booking or adding a Special Service Request? Please contact us or dial 711 (TTY). There’s never a fee to add an SSR to an existing booking.

In addition, please let our airport crewmembers know what assistance you need.

Onboard services

  • An individual safety briefing will be offered to any customer who may need the assistance of another person to move expeditiously to an exit in the event of an emergency, or whose disability prevents them from receiving the safety information presented in the safety briefing.
  • Assistance with stowing and retrieving carry-on and assistive devices when this assistance is disability-related.
  • Assistance with opening food and drink items, however we are unable to provide assistance with actual eating or drinking.
  • Assistance to and from the entrance to the lavatory, including utilization of the onboard aisle chair upon request. We are unable to provide assistance within the lavatory or with elimination functions at a customer seat. Please note that lavatories are not accessible, but they are equipped with grab bars and accessible handles.

Nut or pet allergies

Our customers that have allergies to nuts or animals can  contact JetBlue  to request a MEDA SSR be added to their booking. We ask that you also inform a crewmember at the gate and onboard of your allergy and the accommodations needed.

Customers who have allergies should make arrangements to the best of their abilities to be prepared in case of an allergic reaction or emergency during their flight.

Nut allergies

While JetBlue does not serve peanuts, we do have some offerings of products that contain tree nuts. There is also the possibility that some food items come from facilities that manufacture products that may contain nuts or peanut products. See the full list of our onboard snacks and beverages.

JetBlue does not provide a formal announcement on board the aircraft or in the gate area regarding the restrictive consumption of nuts, and we can’t prevent customers from bringing nuts onboard or consuming them aboard the aircraft.

We ask that you inform an inflight crewmember of your nut allergy when you board. Upon request, an inflight crewmember will create a buffer zone one row in front and one row behind the person who has the allergy. The inflight crewmember will ask customers seated in the buffer zone to refrain from consuming any nut containing products they have brought on board. In addition, we will not serve any nut containing products to these rows.

Animal allergies

If you have animal allergies, you can be moved and re-seated away from any animals traveling.  JetBlue accepts up to six small animals as pets per flight and is required by regulation to transport approved service animals.  Please check in with a crewmember at the gate for the most up-to-date information on whether an animal may be on your flight.

Aircraft cleaning

To maintain the appearance of our aircraft, we perform regular cleaning at multiple levels. During each scheduled stop, we clean the lavatories, galleys, seating areas, and carpets. Every night, we carry out a more thorough cleaning, which includes additional areas like tray tables, side walls, and coffee pots.

Our aircraft are equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, which are used in various settings like hospitals, cars, and homes. These filters remove 99.97% of particles larger than 0.3 microns, meeting U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) standards.

Deaf or hard of hearing

If you’re deaf or hard of hearing and need assistance, please add the Special Services Request to your reservation from the dropdown box in the booking flow. You can also contact us or dial 711 for our relay services. There’s never an extra fee charged to add an SSR.

Blind or low vision

If you’re deaf or hard of hearing and need assistance, please add the Special Services Request to your reservation from the dropdown box in the booking flow. You can also contact us or dial 711 for our relay services. There’s never an extra fee charged to add an SSR.

Traveling with medication

Customers may bring necessary medications, including liquids, gels, and aerosols, in reasonable quantities for your trip. You may also bring any associated supplies (e.g., syringes, pens, infusers, saline solution, etc.) on board JetBlue flights.

Medication should always remain with you—never in checked bags. Please note the following:

  • Our crewmembers do not provide medical services or administration of medication.
  • Our aircraft are not equipped with refrigerators.  If you have medication that needs to be refrigerated, you may bring a small, insulated cooler that meets the carry-on bag requirements.

Other health concerns

If you recently had surgery or are under medical care, please communicate any assistance needed by adding a Special Service Request code to your reservation, then communicate this in person to the JetBlue crewmembers at the gate. If health concerns are observed by JetBlue crewmembers, a note from an attending physician or health assessment at the airport may be required to provide travel. This is to ensure safe travel is possible for you and the other customers on the flight.
