A little background...
San Juan, also known as La Ciudad Amurallada (the walled city), is the capital city of Puerto Rico, and is home to one of the largest natural harbors in the Caribbean. Founded in 1521, it didn't take long for the beautiful city to become a popular vacation destination - and today San Juan's ideal location in the northeast Caribbean means that your perfect getaway is only a quick flight from the continental United States. With a year-round temperature of 80 degrees, and multiple daily flights from cities as far north as Boston, you can't go wrong with a great vacation in San Juan.
Sun and Sand
A long stretch of beaches in front of luxury resorts, restaurants, private beach clubs, and parks, Isla Verde Beach is usually quiet during the week. Over the weekend, however, the beach comes alive - and as the city's largest beach, it's the go-to place for every activity under the sun, from swimming to parasailing and jet skiing. The beach's beautiful tropical landscape, warm blue waters, and pristine sands might just be part of the perfect recipe for relaxation.
Catedral de San Juan
Just inland from where the first Spanish soldiers arrived in Puerto Rico stands Catedral de San Juan (San Juan Cathedral) - a historic landmark that took more than 100 years to build - and fosters a deep spiritual connection with the island's history. There is nothing quite like immersing yourself in history, and Catedral de San Juan makes it easy to do.
After dark, this famous restaurant and bar district along the southern end of Fortaleza Street in Old San Juan comes alive, with great dining options as well as parties that continue well into the early morning hours. South Fortaleza, or "SoFo" has developed a reputation as "restaurant row" and includes some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. This is a "must-visit" for any foodie.
So much more than "just a statue", La Rogativa tells the story of the courage of the people of San Juan. In 1792, under direction from a Bishop, they marched at night in an effort to appeal to their god, and consequently saved the city from British occupation. Seeing the march from offshore while hearing the singing, British troops thought that local reinforcements had arrived in San Juan. La Rogativa stands at the end of Paseo de La Princesa in the heart of Old San Juan, an looks absolutely stunning against a Caribbean sunset.
There is so much more to Puerto Rico than just San Juan. Whether you want to relax in Vieques, do some world-class surfing in Rincon, or take in the history of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico has something for everyone. For everything that there is to do, check out our Puerto Rico vacation packages.
