A little background
Famous for its music culture, and the birthplace of Ian Flemming's "James Bond" series, Jamaica sits as the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. Jamaica is actually the fifth-largest island nation in the Caribbean, and enjoys a fittingly diverse and beautiful landscape. From pristine, white-sandy beaches to mountain resorts with great hiking, Jamaica has it all. With an average year-round temperature of 81 degrees, Jamaica is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year - and JetBlue serves both Montego Bay and Kingston with daily service from multiple US cities.
Just what the doctor ordered
On a visit to Jamaica in 1906, Dr. Alexander James McCatty decided he liked this particular beach in Montego Bay so much that he would buy it. After buying the property, he donated it back to Jamaica to found a private beach club, which is today known as Doctor's Cave Bathing Club, located right in the heart of downtown Montego Bay, the private beach is arguably one of the nicest beaches in all of Jamaica; low surf, crystal clear blue water and fine, warm white sand.
Dunn's River Falls
Nestled between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are the Dunn's River Falls - where fresh rainwater cascades gently through the rain forest and out into the Caribbean Sea. As the clear, cool water makes its way to the sea, it pools in natural limestone formations and is very inviting for a relaxing dip in the water. It is actually possible to walk up the cascades quite a ways, making Dunn's River Falls truly a sight to behold.
One of just four places in the world where this phenomenon occurs, Glistening Waters is a great natural wonder near Montego Bay. When disturbed by boats or swimmers, the water glows a brilliant shade of phosphorescent blue. Of the four places in the world that offer this phenomenon, Glistening Waters boasts the most vivid experience, due to a more consistent water temperature than the other locations. The best time to experience this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon is at night, when the effect is so vivid that it looks as if there are lights under the water. If you time this excursion right, you can also experience a beautiful Jamaican sunset.
Just outside of Montego Bay, you can enjoy the unexpected pleasure of a bobsled ride through the jungle, much like the course that the Jamaican bobsled team practiced on before the 1988 winter Olympics. The course starts from a height of about 700 feet and is about 3,200 feet in length, winding its way through the jungle. You are in control of your sled's speed at all time, so its possible to make this either a scenic or thrilling experience.
Glass bottom boating
Departing from multiple points throughout Montego Bay are glass bottom boat tours, which offer stunning views of the reefs just a few hundred feet off shore. In addition to just enjoying the boat ride, it is also possible to arrange snorkeling or scuba diving excursions from the glass bottom boat. Jamaica's coral reefs are some of the healthiest in the Caribbean and a must-see on any all-inclusive Jamaica vacation!
