A little background
With great nightlife, exciting attractions, and accommodations to fit any budget, it's no wonder Cancun is one of the world's most popular vacation destinations. In addition to miles of pristine beaches, Cancun boasts great snorkeling and scuba diving - and is home to the world's second largest barrier reef. Beach activities aside, many visitors overlook the amazing historic sites - such as Aztec ruins - some of which are located right in the hotel zone. With an average year-round temperature near 80 degrees, Cancun is beautiful at any time of year, although it tends to get more crowded in late March and early April, when the beaches fill up with spring break crowds. JetBlue is pleased to serve Cancun, Mexico with multiple daily nonstop flights from Boston, Fort Lauderdale, New York (JFK), and Orlando.
One of the largest and best-preserved Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico, Chichén Itzá was originally a center of Mayan civilization, and is classified as one of the seven modern wonders of the world by UNESCO. Within the site stands El Castillo, a temple that was once used by the Mayans for worship. This site tends to get crowded, so it is best to see it early in the day. Additionally, the site lies about an hour outside of Cancun's hotel zone, so if you'd prefer not to make the drive, the smaller (but equally impressive) El Rey Ruins are located right in the middle of the Cancun hotel zone.
If you find yourself needing to slow down from the fast-paced nightlife and beaches on your Cancun getaway, head to Isla Mujeres, which is just a short boat ride away. Ferries leave from three different Cancun ports multiple times a day. The island, which sits about eight miles off the Yucatan peninsula, is home to interesting sites, including Hacienda Mundaca, the ruined mansion of a 19th-century slave trader and some peaceful, sea-turtle frequented white-sand beaches.
Cancun is lucky to host a number of beautiful golf courses right in the hotel district. Courses include those designed by famous architects, but also feature driving ranges and putting greens. Moreover, certified pros are available to help you improve your swing at any level. But be warned: many of the golf courses, while picturesque, are extremely challenging.
Merengue...or do the Cha-Cha
Besides its beautiful beaches and crystal clear water, Cancun is also famous for its diverse nightlife - and for many visitors, this is the main attraction. Some of the best nightclubs in the world are located within the hotel zone, and music spans every genre - from traditional salsa, to today's chart-toppers, to the freshest EDM beats. If a club doesn't sound like your ideal night out, not to worry - Cancun is also home to some great spots which are perfect for a quiet night out on the town.
One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, more!
Mexico is famous for its tequila - a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant. Tequila is widely available throughout mexico, and Cancun is no exception. Along Avenida Kukulkan (the main street in the hotel zone) there are many establishments which not only sell the beverage, but also allow you to learn more about the different kinds of tequila through tastings held daily. Tequila is also served in nearly every restaurant in Cancun, so you'll be able to enjoy your new favorite beverage throughout your entire vacation!
