Shoppers' Delight

The largest shopping center on the Dominican Republic's north coast, Plaza Turisol Complex has about 80 different outlets where you can find upscale merchandise, souvenirs and gifts. One visit to this huge complex and you'll likely find what you're looking for, efficiently and from the city's best shops. Plaza Turisol Complex is centrally located about five minutes east of the city.

Green Fields Forever

Founded and designed in 1984 by golf architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Playa Dorada Golf Course is a flat, conditioned, 18-hole course surrounded by stunning mountains, tropical forests and gardens. Its flowing layout, suitable for all golfers, has lush, wide fairways, four greens by the sea and five greens bordering inland water. Playa Dorada Golf Course also offers free group golf clinics, reasonably-priced individual lessons, a restaurant and a pro shop.

The Real Deal

Discover the real Dominican Republic with an Outback Safari tour, a fun and educational chance to experience the beautiful countryside outside of the big hotels and resorts in Puerto Plata. You'll visit a typical Dominican home; swim in a crystal-clear river; enjoy a picnic and merengue show; taste fresh fruit and sugar cane on a fruit plantation tour; see native animals like crocodiles, iguanas and turtles; visit a 15-mile long secluded beach; and more! The tour includes unlimited water, soft drinks, rum and beer.

Ahoy, Buckos!

Commissioned by King Felipe II of Spain in 1564, Fort San Felipe (El Morro de San Felipe) is the oldest fort in the New World. Originally constructed to protect Puerto Plata from pirates and corsairs, the fort took 33 years to build and has walls more than six feet thick. With its hilltop location offering a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, the fort has always been a popular attraction for tourists and now serves as a museum showcasing its important role in history and housing old canons, guns and many other weapons used during war.

Amber Alert

Discover a unique collection of rare amber specimens at the Dominican Amber Museum. Set in a stunning Victorian structure, this museum houses several fossils captured in most transparent amber in the world. The fossil collection was first displayed in 1980 and since then, millions of visitors from around the world have enjoyed the beauty of the perfectly conserved leaves, flowers, insects and reptiles—including a 15-inch lizard that dates from about 30 to 40 million years ago—preserved in amber. Stop by the gift shop if you're interested in purchasing some jewelry made of—what else?—amber!

Bird's Eye View

Located 2,640 feet above sea level, Isabel de Torres Scientific Reserve is a must for nature and bird lovers. After a ten-minute cable car ride, you'll arrive at the observation tower to enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding areas, and hear the sound of exotic birdlife such as the Hispaniolan parrot and red-tailed hawk. This 35-acre subtropical mountain reserve and peaceful botanical garden also contains plants native to the region including many varieties of orchids.

Chasing Papi

If you're searching out fine dining in a tropical and relaxed atmosphere, your pursuit ends at Le Papillon. Set in the midst of royal palms and decorated with historic and eccentric items, Le Papillon offers a beautiful dining environment and an extensive menu of international cuisine. Renowned German chef and owner Thomas Ackermann has for more than 20 years been spoiling locals and tourists with fresh dishes individually prepared to please every taste. Try the savory meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes and don't forget to order a caipirinha (traditional Brazilian drink).

Your Way or the Hemingway

Hemingway's Cafe may be the one of those places where you can have way too much fun. For starters, they serve great cocktails and tasty comfort food such as juicy burgers, fajitas and quesadillas, but the real fun begins when the DJs or live bands rock the house with reggae, merengue and other rhythms—and when patrons sing their hearts out on karaoke nights. There's even a Latin fiesta on Saturday nights. Of course, they're open till the wee hours.

Take It Slow

Consistently rated one of the top restaurants in Puerto Plata by both Lonely Planet and Rough Guides, Café Cito combines jazz, blues and vintage rock 'n' roll with fresh Caribbean and Mediterranean culinary specialties and Puerto Plata's only "try before you buy" cigar bar. This is the kind of place that employs a retired Greek lady to spend two days making world-famous moussaka, so come prepared to chill out for at least 45 minutes before you eat. It's well worth the wait and we think you'll enjoy spending the time sipping Dominican cognac and smoking hand-rolled cigars.
