Town meetings were held here between 1764 and 1774, and the site is also known as the "Cradle of Liberty" because of the number of revolutionaries and abolitionists, including Samuel Adams, who delivered important speeches here. The oldest public park in the country, Boston Common is rich in history. Almost 50 acres in size, it was originally used as a camp by the British before the Revolutionary War. Until 1817, grazing cattle shared the space with public hangings! Today, the park is used for formal and informal gatherings such as concerts, protests, softball games and ice skating. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Pope John Paul II gave speeches here. At the park's Central Burying Ground you can find the burial sites of the artist Gilbert Stuart and the composer William Billings.
