Up, Up, Up and AwayDon't spend a fortune on a tour bus, ride the Cable Cars, the best way to get around and get a good view of the city. Considered one of San Francisco's signatures, the Cable Cars were conceived by Andrew Hallidie in 1873 after witnessing a horse-drawn carriage accident on a steep hill. These cars are pulled along their hilly track by an underground cable and are lots of fun especially if you stand on the outside. Tickets are $3.00 each way per adult or $9.00 for an all day pass. Cable Cars run from 6 a.m. to about 1:00 a.m. Rock of AgesOriginally used as a military fort in the 1850s and later home to a maximum security prison, the infamous Alcatraz Island (also known as "The Rock") has been the site for many books, movies and TV shows. Take a self-guided tour or a fantastic audio tour narrated by ex-convicts as you visit the prison Cell House, the large dining hall, exercise yard, visitation windows and even see Frank Morris's cell. Tickets usually sell out so book in advance. Open daily from 9:30 a.m. Admission starts at $10.75 for children including the audio tour. Get there on ferry from Pier 41 on Fisherman's Wharf. Phone: (415) 705-5555 Gold MineA great retreat from the city, Golden Gate Park is the ultimate haven away from urban chaos. Larger than Central Park in New York City, this beautiful landmark once consisted of sand dunes and is now most famous for its spectacular gardens and landscapes like the Garden of Shakespeare's Flowers, the Japanese Tea Garden, Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Garden, and the Conservatory of Flowers, the oldest glass-and-wood Victorian greenhouse in the Western Hemisphere and home to more than 10,000 plants from around the globe. There are also great museums and many other activities from archery to dog runs. Bordered from north to south by Fulton St. and Lincoln Way, Stanyan St. from the east and Great Highway from the west.
