Underground Music

A great place to polish your merengue dancing skills, La Guácara Taína, is the best discotheque in the Dominican Republic. Drawing equal number of locals and visitors, La Guácara Taína is set in an underground cave within a verdant park. If you miss a step, don't worry. Let There Be Light

A monumental lighthouse towering 676 feet, El Faro a Colon features a lighting system with 149 searchlights and a 70-kilowatt beam that circles out for nearly 44 miles. These lights project a huge cross in the sky which can be seen as far as Puerto Rico. There's also a chapel in the center of the lighthouse which contains the Columbus tomb and, allegedly, his "bones". Admission starts at 20 cents for children 11 and under. Take a relaxing walk on soft white sand and then soak your feet in the clear, shallow blue waters of Boca Chica, the principal beach resort near Santo Domingo. A popular spot fancied by its European visitors, Boca Chica's east side has been nicknamed "Saint Tropez". At this beach you'll also find a natural coral reef, and go loco over the wide array of pizza and fast food stands, beach cottages, chaise lounges, water sports concessions, and beach tables. Let the Music Play

Stretching for 9 miles along the Caribbean shore, El Malecón is Santo Domingo's most popular choice for casual strolling, family outings and sightseeing. Here you will find ice cream parlors, restaurants and great nightlife in several bars and discos. At the Malecón, the party doesn't stop. The Dominican Republic's Carnival and July's Merengue Festival are both held here, and with its colorful and lively atmosphere full of hot Latin beats, many describe it as an open-air disco.

More than Just Tapas

One of the most prestigious restaurants in the Caribbean, Lina Restaurant offers international cuisine, with an emphasis on Spanish dishes. This modern restaurant was originally opened by Spanish-born Lina Aguado, who originally came to Santo Domingo as the personal chef of the dictator Trujillo. Today, the restaurant's kitchen is ruled by four master chefs who have been entrusted with her secret recipes. Serving some of the best and freshest seafood in the Dominican Republic, La Bahía offers one of the biggest varieties of seafood dishes in the Caribbean. Great choices include the ceviche (seafood marinated in lime juice) or lobster cocktail, kingfish in coconut sauce, sea bass Ukrainian style and baked red snapper. Viva Vesuvio

The most famous Italian restaurant on the Dominican Republic, Vesuvio sits right in front of el Malecón, with a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea. Since 1954, this restaurant has been offering a great atmosphere for both business and family lunches and dinners. The food here is fresh and cooked from scratch and it features specialties like Dominican Crayfish a la Vesuvio (topped with garlic and bacon), and Pappardelle al Bosque (noodles with porcini mushrooms, rosemary, and garlic). For pizza lovers, Pizzeria Vesuvio next door offers a unique three-foot pizza. Reservations recommended on Fridays and Saturdays.
