Spoken Words

A marketplace and a meeting hall since 1742, Faneuil Hall was a gift to the town from prosperous merchant Peter Faneuil. Town meetings were held here between 1764 and 1774, and the site is also known as the "Cradle of Liberty" because of the number of revolutionaries and abolitionists, including Samuel Adams, who delivered important speeches here. Fanueil Hall is now part of a larger marketplace with more than 100 carts and shops, and over 50 places to eat. Admission is free. On 1 Faneuil Hall Sq. (617) 523-1300

Still Standing

One of Boston's most beloved landmarks, the Old North Church is famous for housing the two lanterns that glimmered from its steeple on the night Paul Revere made his important ride in 1775. This beautiful site, built in 1723, is the oldest church in Boston but remains an active Episcopal Church; it features an 18th century garden with unusual commemorative plaques and a gift shop. Famous visitors have included Presidents James Monroe, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Gerald R. Ford, and Queen Elizabeth II. The first memorial to George Washington is also here. Free tours are available. Fifty-minute behind-the-scenes tours range from $5-$8 and include visits to the steeple and the crypt. Open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. On 193 Salem St. (617) 523-6676

Free for All

Your visit to Boston isn't complete until you walk the Freedom Trail, which leads a visitor to 16 historical sites where critical events in Boston's and the nation's struggle for freedom occurred. The nearly 2.5 mile Trail, which passes by the Ben Franklin statue marking America's first public school, Paul Revere's House, the USS Constitution and more, also connects seven of the eight historic sites that make up the Boston National Historical Park. Guided tours are available. On 15 State St. (617) 242-5642

Uncommon Ground

The oldest public park in the country, Boston Common is rich in history. Almost 50 acres in size, it was originally used as a camp by the British before the Revolutionary War. Until 1817, grazing cattle shared the space with public hangings! Today, the park is used for formal and informal gatherings such as concerts, protests, softball games and ice skating. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Pope John Paul II gave speeches here. At the park's Central Burying Ground you can find the burial sites of the artist Gilbert Stuart and the composer William Billings. Open daily from dawn until 11:30 p.m. Bounded by Tremont St., Park St., Beacon St., Charles St., and Boylston St. (617) 426-3115

Catch of the Hour

One of Boston's top seafood restaurants, Legal Sea Foods is known for serving fish within 48 hours of catch (even the Alaskan salmon) and for making the best "chowdah'" on the coast. This half-century-old joint began as a tiny restaurant above a fish market and has grown to over 30 family-owned restaurants from Boston to Florida; they've been serving their famous New England clam chowder at every Presidential Inauguration since 1981. Try the smoked Bluefish pate, shrimp wontons and lobster and crabmeat raviolis. Entrees $14-$40. On 26 Park Plaza. (617) 426-4444

Fun on Tap

At one of greater Boston's first brewpubs, the Commonwealth Brewing Company, you'll go for the beers and stay for the food. The wide variety of produced-on-premise beers range from cellar temperature and chilled draughts to seasonal brews. A tempting American-fare menu features nachos, wings, ribs, salads, beer-battered onion rings, shrimp and clam chowder, chili, pasta, seafood, and other favorites like lamb and apricot sausage and steak tips. Tours of the brewing operation are available at 12 p.m.-4 p.m. daily by appointment. Open daily for lunch and dinner. On 138 Portland St. (617) 523-8383

Love at First Bite

A family-run establishment, D'Amore's is a cozy Italian restaurant located in the North End, that has been feeding locals and tourists authentic, reasonably-priced Italian cuisine for over 25 years. Start out with their fresh mozzarella cheese and sliced tomatoes or the calamari scampi and then move on to succulent dishes like sausage sauté or chicken a la Diavolo. Make sure you save room for their tempting cannolis. You'll also love their excellent wine list which includes Italian and American wines. Entrees $12-$18. Open Monday-Saturday 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sunday 12 p.m.-10:30 p.m. On 76 Salem St. (617) 523-8820
