New York's JetBlue Is Now Boarding

JFK-Based Airline Announces OnBoard Satellite Programming and Takes Off to Buffalo and Fort Lauderdale

New York, NY, 02/10/2000 -- JetBlue’s first passenger service will depart from JFK for Ft. Lauderdale at 8:55pm Friday evening, with close to a full flight on its brand new 162-seat Airbus A-320 aircraft featuring roomy all-leather seats, comfortable legroom, a wider cabin, and spacious overhead bins.

The airline’s first week of service will include two daily roundtrips between JFK and Ft. Lauderdale and increase to three daily roundtrips on February 17. JetBlue will inaugurate passenger service to Buffalo, on February 17, and to Tampa, on March 16. Each city will be served with three daily roundtrips. The airline expects to serve 11 cities by the end of 2000 with a fleet of 10 new aircraft.

Speaking at a JFK press conference today, JetBlue CEO David Neeleman said: “As we prepare for our inaugural flights to Buffalo and Fort Lauderdale tomorrow, it is an appropriate time to recognize the tremendous efforts of those political leaders who have supported us since day one. In particular, Senator Chuck Schumer has lead the charge in Washington to help JetBlue obtain its landing and takeoff slots at JFK and to become a certified air carrier ready to bring affordable air fares to all New Yorkers.

“As a businessman, I am also grateful to Governor Pataki for helping to create the economic climate in New York which invites new businesses like JetBlue to locate here. In addition, we could never have come this far without the bold and longstanding support of Congressman Gregory Meeks, whose Sixth Congressional District boarders JFK, and others in New York’s Congressional delegation including Representatives Louise Slaughter, John LaFalce, Jack Quinn and Tom Reynolds. I am particularly proud that JetBlue is headquartered in a thriving New York City under Mayor Giuliani’s leadership,” Neeleman added.

Also at the press conference, Neeleman unveiled the airline’s world-first LiveTV inflight entertainment system receiving 24 channels of DIRECTV programming at every seat. Joined by Terry Ferguson, Senior Vice President of DIRECTV and Andre de Greef, President of LiveTV, the three announced the satellite programming onboard with celebrities, celebrity-impersonators and other representatives of the onboard selections.

The DIRECTV package includes ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, The Golf Channel, CNNsi, Bloomberg TV, CNN Headline News, CNNfn, ZDTV, The Weather Channel, The Travel Channel, Home and Garden TV, The Food Network, Game Show Network, A&E, The History Channel, Discovery Channel, Discovery Health Channel, The Learning Channel, Animal Planet, and Boomerang, featuring classic cartoons from the Cartoon Network. Two of the 24 channels will be used to bring special events such as sports and concerts to passengers on an ongoing basis.
