New York-Based Airline Launches Ticket Sales, Website, and Advertising
New York, NY, 01/11/2000 -- JetBlue launched its new website (www.jetblue.com) and reservations center (800-JETBLUE) with a new “Unbelievable”-themed advertising campaign breaking today with full-page advertisements in major newspapers.
Tickets are now on sale for the airline’s inaugural service to and from Fort Lauderdale starting on February 11, and for Buffalo service commencing February 17. JetBlue’s fares are up to 65% less than existing fares now available on identical routes. Fort Lauderdale fares, for examples, start from $79 one way and Buffalo from just $49 one way, not including taxes.
From JFK, the airline will serve three daily non-stop roundtrips each to Fort Lauderdale and Buffalo.
JetBlue CEO David Neeleman said: “We’re a new kind of low-fare airline, with deep pockets, new planes, leather seats with more legroom, great people and innovative thinking. With our friendly service and hassle-free technology, we’re going to bring humanity back to air travel.”
Considered to be the nation’s first “mega start-up” applicant, with $130 million in equity capital, JetBlue’s fleet will comprise up to 82 new Airbus A-320s, valued at more than $4 billion. The A-320’s, among the world’s quietest, most environmentally-friendly passenger jets, will seat 162 passengers in a single coach cabin.
The airline will be the first to equip its jetliners with 24 channels of DIRECTV programming received by LiveTV’s in-flight system at every seat for a nominal charge. Inflight news and entertainment selections, to be supplied by DirecTV Airborne, will include Bloomberg, CNNfn, ESPN, the Discovery Channel, and the Weather Channel, among other prime selections.
JetBlue, to be based at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, plans to serve 11 cities with 10 new Airbus A320 aircraft by the end of its first year of operations, pending final government approval.
In a separate announcement, JetBlue today confirmed that its next destination will be Tampa. Also, the airline has committed to serving both Rochester and Syracuse, NY, by mid-2001 and Burlington, VT, by the end of 2000.
JetBlue is considering service to an additional 38 cities including: Atlanta; Boston; Canton/Akron; Charleston, SC; Charleston, WV; Charlotte, NC; Chicago; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Columbia, SC; Columbus, OH; Dallas/Fort Worth; Dayton; Denver; Flint; Ft. Myers; Grand Rapids, MI; Greensboro; Greenville/Spartanburg; Houston; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, FL; Louisville; Memphis; Milwaukee; Minneapolis/St Paul; Nashville; New Orleans; Norfolk; Orlando; Pittsburgh; Portland, ME; Raleigh/Durham; Richmond; Salt Lake City; Savannah; Washington, DC; and, West Palm Beach.
The United States Department of Transportation has certified that JetBlue Airways Corporation’s management is fit, willing and able to provide scheduled air service and it has issued the company a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity. This certificate will be made effective by the DOT when JetBlue completes its Federal Aviation Administration certification process, which is in its final proceedings this month.
