A long stretch of beaches in front of luxury resorts and posh high-rise condos and private homes, restaurants, private clubs, guesthouses, parks, and even a cemetery, Isla Verde Beach is quiet during the week and full of life during the weekends. This is the city's largest beach and the place to go for every seaside activity under the sun, from swimming and sunbathing to parasailing, bodysurfing, water skiing, jet skiing and beach volleyball. With its beautiful tropical landscape, warm blue waters and pristine sands, the beach is also a natural preserve. Free to the public.

World-class surfing can be enjoyed in nearly every part of the island with waves that can reach 35 feet high, but particularly in Rincon, site of the 1968 and 1988 world surfing championships and host to numerous major competitions.

The largest in the world, the Bacardi Rum Distillery is only a 15-minute drive from San Juan and is one of the most popular destinations in Puerto Rico. Visitors are treated to a fascinating guided tour of the facilities at the "Cathedral of Rum." Everything from the vast fermentation vats to the high-speed bottling machinery is at work and on display. A trolley takes you to the Bacardi family museum, where a history of the product and landmarks in its development are seen. The tour ends at the lofty, bat-like pavilion, which you may have seen if you have gazed across San Juan Bay from the southern walls of the Old City. Here you can sample the world-famous rum and buy souvenirs or a variety of Bacardi products at the gift shop. If you are lucky, your trip may coincide with the annual Bacardi Arts and Crafts Fair, a joyfully crowded, two-day event that features local artists and artisans and plenty of music. If not, vendors are often on the grounds and selections of artisans' products are always on sale in the gift shop.
Last Bastion
Explore the maze of tunnels, dungeons and barracks of El Morro, a six-level fortress dating from 1540. Having suffered countless attacks from the likes of Sir Francis Drake in 1595, the Dutch fleet in 1625 and American ships in 1898, El Morro still stands strong and it's one of the largest forts built by the Spaniards in the Caribbean. The spectacular building rises 140 feet about sea level and has walls up to 18 feet thick. The top affords a breathtaking view of the Caribbean.

After dark, this hip restaurant and bar district along the southern end of Fortaleza Street in Old San Juan comes alive with a buzz that resonates well into the wee hours of the morning. The feverish weekend action (in Puerto Rico, the weekend unofficially begins on Thursday) is touted to rival even that of South Beach.
